Many people are interested in learning about sedation dentistry and the benefits it offers. Here are a few of the questions we hear most frequently, but if you don't see yours here, please call our office at (817) 962-2323 so we can help.

Who should use sedation dentistry?

The use of sedation in dentistry might sound extreme, but if you suffer from severe dental phobia as many patients do, you know just how serious these fears are. When anxiety keeps you from visiting the dentist, your smile suffers, and eventually, you will have problems that will require treatment by a dentist.

There are several reasons someone might need sedation to help with their dental care, such as:

  • Needing multiple treatments to be done at once
  • Needing to have a lengthy procedure done
  • Having a strong gag reflex
  • Having a low pain tolerance
  • Having unmanageable fears about the dentist

If any of these problems apply to you, your sedation dentist in Arlington, TX might want to consider providing sedation dentistry.

What sedation methods do you offer?

We offer nitrous oxide (inhalation sedation) and oral conscious sedation.

The dosage depends on the dental procedure we are performing, your anxiety level, and your response to sedatives. We do not over sedate – you will be given the minimal dosage necessary to ensure your comfort. We administer the medication precisely and monitor you throughout your visit as a safety precaution.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide also referred to as “laughing gas,” gives patients an immediate feeling of relaxation and mild euphoria and helps reduce sensations of pain when used in conjunction with a local anesthetic. The gas is inhaled through a small nasal mask, which is why you will also hear it referred to as inhalation sedation.

In addition to providing a way to ease your anxiety and help you get the care you need, nitrous oxide also offers the benefit of exiting your system quickly after we stop the flow of gas. We will leave the mask in place for a few minutes after treatment so you can get the benefit of breathing in pure oxygen, which also helps flush the nitrous from your system.

Nitrous is safe for children, and since the effects wear off quickly, patients do not need to arrange transportation to and from the dental office.

Oral Conscious Sedation

If you need a deeper level of relaxation, you may benefit from oral conscious sedation. We prescribe a calming medication for you to take before your appointment, so you feel relaxed when you arrive at our office. You will remain awake and coherent and able to answer questions and respond to the dentist without any trouble. Since the sedative stays in your system for several hours, you will require a driver to get you to and from your appointment.

We can also use a combination of the two methods may for a deeper level of sedation. However, you will always be aware of your surroundings, and you will be fully functional. We do not use general anesthesia at our office.

How can sedation dentistry help me?

Most frequently it is patients with dental fear and anxiety who request sedation. However, it has other advantages as well. Sedation can:

  • Reduce or eliminate dental chair fatigue.
  • Prevent over-active gag reflex.
  • Allow us to perform more dental work in a single appointment.
  • Help highly anxious, restless, or hyperactive patients relax.

What can I expect with oral sedation?

Sedation dentistry can take the stress out of visiting the dentist and ensure that you stay on top of your oral health. A few of the many benefits of sedation include:

  • You have little to no memory of the appointment
  • It can suppress an overactive gag reflex
  • It allows us to perform more extensive dental work in one visit

With oral conscious sedation, Dr. Sater prescribes a sedative for you to take before arriving at our office for your appointment. When you get to our office, you will be fully conscious, but feeling relaxed and at ease. Patients who take the oral sedative pill are still able to answer questions, follow instructions, walk, and use the bathroom. You will feel secure and calm and will experience no pain during your treatment.

The amount of time it takes for the sedative to wear off after treatment can vary depending on the individual. Most patients go home and take a nap, and wake up with very little, if any, memory of their appointment.

What is nitrous oxide?

Some patients are nervous about visiting the dentist, and others just want to be comfortable during long, extensive treatments. No matter what the reason, the team at Rush Creek Dentistry in Arlington, TX includes a sedation dentist who can offer the best in sedation methods.

Nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas, can be used for patients of all ages and is an excellent way to ease mild concerns and anxiety.  As you inhale the gas through a small nasal mask, it puts you into a calm, mildly euphoric state. Many patients feel extremely at ease while still being conscious and aware. You will be able to answer questions and follow instructions while relaxed, at ease, and completely comfortable.

Is nitrous oxide safe for children?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes nitrous oxide (inhalation sedation) as a safe and effective way to help reduce children’s dental anxiety. At Rush Creek Dentistry, we only use nitrous for our youngest patients. Since it is mild enough for children, it makes their dental visits a much more pleasant experience. In most cases, we do not need to give them shots, which eliminates a great deal of anxiety.

Another benefit to using nitrous is that it is much safer and more efficient for your child’s dental team to provide treatment when your child is calm and relaxed and not resisting.

We do not provide oral conscious sedation for children, and we do not provide general anesthetics for children OR adults.

I'm not a nervous patient. Can sedation benefit me?

Some patients may seek mild sedation during simple dental cleanings to reduce anxiety, to help ease a strong gag reflex, or suppress unwanted movements caused by medical conditions. Mild sedation is typically nitrous oxide, which is commonly referred to as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is administered as a gas through the nose during treatment and works almost immediately to reduce fears and anxieties.

But we don't just use sedation dentistry for patients who are anxious or nervous. We often recommend mild sedation for:

  • Patients who have a strong gag reflex
  • Patients who will be in the dental chair for several hours
  • Patients who want to enjoy several dental treatments at once
  • Patients who we can't properly anesthetize with traditional injections
  • Patients who may shake or tremble during their treatment due to a medical condition
  • Patients who have overly sensitive teeth
  • Patients who have had past traumatic dental experiences

Mild sedation is typically nitrous oxide, which is commonly referred to as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is administered as a gas through the nose during treatment and works almost immediately at reducing fears and anxieties. One of the benefits of nitrous oxide is that it quickly leaves your system after we stop the flow of gas, so you will be able to drive yourself to and from your appointment.

How do I know if sedation dentistry is right for me?

Many patients who are uneasy about dental care may benefit from our dental sedation options, which include nitrous oxide sedation and oral conscious sedation. These two methods of sedation can be used together for a stronger effect.

During a consultation at our Arlington, TX dental office, we will be happy to discuss your concerns to decide if sedation dentistry will benefit you and which method may be appropriate.
