Toothache Dental Emergency
To most people, a dental emergency may seem like something that happens to cause injury to a tooth, the gums, or another area of the mouth. A sporting accident may be envisioned, or a break caused by a hard piece of food. In fact, one of the most common reasons that people visit their dentist for urgent care is that they have a very bad toothache.
Most of us have experienced a toothache at some point. At Rush Creek Dentistry in Arlington, Texas, we partner with patients to proactively prevent dental problems that could lead to unnecessary pain and stress. Still, we understand that some people may develop pain such as:
- A constant, dull ache
- Throbbing in a tooth or in a localized area
- Intense, sharp pain that occurs if a tooth is exposed to hot or cold, or to sugar
- Shooting pain that affects the mouth, face, or even the ear
- General oral or jaw pain
Even when you are in pain, you may not think of your toothache as a dental emergency. You may be wrong. A toothache develops because damage has occurred somewhere inside of the tooth. Infection may be near the tooth root. Treating tooth pain with pain relieving medication instead of professional dental care might provide temporary relief. However, this approach can allow infection to worsen, leading to a more complicated problem down the line. The staff at Rush Creek Dentistry encourages patients to schedule a visit at the first sign of pain. This allows us to perform care in the most conservative manner.
Because toothaches are often the result of poor oral health, we encourage our patients to maintain regular visits with their dentist and hygienist. Routine care checks teeth and gums for early signs of decay and infection. Cleanings remove built-up plaque and tartar, making it more difficult for oral bacteria to weaken tooth structure.
Home care is a vital aspect of oral health, as well. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily inhibits the formation of plaque. For additional protection, follow up with an antiseptic mouth wash.
