BOTOX® Treatments

BOTOX® Cosmetic, a cosmetic treatment used commonly to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, gently relaxes muscles. It has the added benefit of headache and facial tension reduction when used regularly.

As a temporary treatment, BOTOX® is tolerated well by most patients and beneficial effects tend to occur within a day or two with maximum benefits taking full effect after about one week. Treatment can last up to 3-4 months before retreatment is required.

Because of the ability to relax muscles, dentists have found additional benefits in the treatment of TMJ and bruxism.

What Are TMJ and Bruxism?

TMJ or TMD is short for temporomandibular joint dysfunction, a collection of joint disorders that lead to pain, popping, clicking, locking, headaches, migraines, and earaches.

Bruxism, or teeth grinding or clenching, is often a closely related condition that causes unnecessary wear and pressure within the jaw joint system and surrounding muscles. Bruxism is most common during sleep, but can occur unconsciously during the day, especially when concentrating or grappling with stress.

Long-term TMJ or bruxism can damage the jaw joints, cause an exaggerated, boxy appearance to the lower jaw, and damage teeth or dentistry. At our Arlington, TX dental office, we offer patients a successful solution.

Treatment of TMJ Dysfunction and Bruxism

Typically, one of the most common treatments for jaw disorders includes a nightguard. Many patients find this treatment effective, especially to protect teeth from damage. Oftentimes, however, treatment with a nightguard is not enough to relieve sore muscles and completely eliminate symptoms because patients still exert significant force with their jaws during nighttime teeth grinding.

BOTOX® provides relief for aching muscles by relaxing the strength of the muscles and reducing the amount of force they can exert. You will still be able to eat and chew all of your favorite foods, but your jaws will exert far less pressure.

As with all muscles, the more you use them, the stronger they become. With long-term use, you may even see a reduction in the size of your jaw muscles, leading to a more natural appearance. Because the muscles surrounding and controlling your jaw joints relax significantly, your jaw pain will also diminish.

With less inflammation, your jaw joint disc will often relax back into its natural position.

How BOTOX® Treatment Works

Treatment with BOTOX® only takes a few minutes and causes minimal discomfort. Dr. Rami Sater, DDS will first locate the muscles with the greatest inflammation and mark the area. With the targeted areas marked, he will use a small needle to deliver BOTOX® directly into your muscles.

Avoid rubbing, massaging, or lying on the affected muscles for 4-6 hours after treatment for the best results.

Additional BOTOX® Treatments

Gummy smiles - If you suffer from a gummy smile, BOTOX® can relax your upper lip, giving you a more esthetic appearance.

Marionette lines – The smile "parentheses" around your lips can deepen with age. Applying BOTOX® to those areas can reduce wrinkles, while still allowing you to express yourself.

Angry eleven – Concentrating or squinting can cause deep wrinkles between the eyebrows over time. Many people refer to this as the "angry eleven." Regular BOTOX® use will give your forehead a smoother appearance and reduce the "angry eleven" between your brows.
